This week’s recipe is Raw Chocolate Mousse which makes a terrific summer dessert for cookouts, dinner parties, or just to enjoy at home! The recipe has only 4 simple ingredients and takes about 10 minutes to make! You may be shocked by the main ingredient: AVOCADO!! But trust us, by the time you have finished you won’t even remember you have put them in! The avocados replace the cream and oily taste normally put into mousse by milk products. It makes for a healthy and creamy vegan dessert. We know raw food can be a bit scary and avocado isn’t normally associated with desserts, but once you take one bite of this you will be pleasantly surprised and will impress your guests!
Raw Vegan Chocolate Mousse
Prep Time: 10 minutes
- 4 Ripe Organic Avocados
- 1 Cup of Sweetener (Agave Nectar or Evaporated Cane Juice)
- 1 Tbls of Pure Vanilla Extract
- 1 Cup of Organic Fair Trade Cocoa Powder (or Carob)
Slice each avocado open and scoop out the insides. Place the inside in a food processor or blender. Next add the sweetener, vanilla, and cocoa powder. Blend or process the mixture until fully blended. The mixture should be smooth and the color of chocolate. You can instantly serve the mousse, however we recommend you let it cool in the fridge for at least an hour. Serve in cups with fresh fruit or mint. Some of our favorite fruits we like to add are strawberries, raspberries, bananas, and sometimes pineapple! Now put your fears behind and delve into this delectable, healthy, and cooling summer dessert!

My stepmom always makes this mousse and it is excellent. You would never know that the main ingredient is avocado. Everyone who tries it absolutely loves it.

I had this recently on top of a raw food cake, not knowing it had avocado in it-it was the best cake I’ve ever eaten.

I made a similar recipe. I added a little vanilla almond milk for creaminess. And some cinnamon is yummy too! Good find 🙂

non-alkalai processed chocolate still has its antioxidants intact. Alkalai or Dutch-processed does not. Look for Chatfield’s or Ahh-Laska raw powders.

Hi. I just noticed that your website looks like it has a few code errors at the very bottom of your blog’s page. I’m not sure if everybody is getting this same bugginess when browsing your website? I am employing a totally different browser than most people, referred to as Opera, so that is what might be causing it? I just wanted to make sure you know. Thanks for posting some great postings and I’ll try to return back with a completely different browser to check things out!

Hi there – thanks for the feedback. Our webmaster looked into this and checked out Opera but couldn’t find the same errors. Maybe you’re using an older version of Opera than he has? WordPress (who hosts our blog) is pretty standards-compliant so maybe it was just a temporary issue? We will continue to check up on this and make sure the site is functioning properly. Thanks again for letting us know and happy reading!

Think this would work using maple syrup, instead of agave?
May 25, 2010 at 8:01 pm
Hi Jenn!
Yes we think Maple Syrup will work just fine with this recipe. Actually, any sweetener we have tried has worked! However, maple Syrup will change the flavor slightly. Have fun making this treat and let us know how it turns out!
Thanks,
Gina from Autonomie Project
