That’s right today, Saturday May 9th is World Fair Trade Day! And you ask yourself, what is World Fair Trade Day? World Fair Trade Day is celebrated on the second saturday of every May and is supported by the World Fair Trade Organization. This day is meant to commemorate the Fair Trade movements around the world, celebrate the workers of the world, and bring awareness about Fair Trade in general. This is a day to learn about economic and environmental stability. Learn how important it is to use fair labor practices, fair economic transactions, and of course treating the Earth as fair as possible.

The first World Fair Trade Day was held in 2002 and this year’s theme is BIG BANG!! Beat poverty Beat climate change Beat financial crisis. This year is likely to be the largest one to date, with 55,000 expected to turn out and Paul McCartney endorsing the day. There are thousands of events worldwide in order to spread the Fair Trade word. To find events in your area, do a quick search on the World Fair Trade Day Organization website. And if you are in the New York area, don’t forget to stop by the World Fair Trade Day street fair, where yours truly is a vendor!

But please keep in mind that Fair Trade should be celebrated every day of the year. To learn more about what fair trade is, check out these helpful sites: Transfair, Fair Labeling Organization, and  the Fair Trade Federation. Also, remember there are now tons of products that are offered Fair Trade, its not just coffee, tea, and chocolate. There are now fair trade clothing, sneakers, flowers, wine and the list keeps expanding. We urge you to support Fair Trade whenever possible, especially in these economic troubles. Because after all Fair Trade Is You, and you have the power to change the world. So, today please take time to reflect and adjust your buying power, your impact is more immense than you know!  And of course have a Happy World Fair Trade Day!

Looks like we are headed back down to New York this Saturday, May 9th, to celebrate World Fair Trade Day. We will celebrate this incredibly important holiday by participating in the Fair Trade Vendor Fair, which includes AP, of course, but also Global Good Partners, Sustainable Threads, Interrupcion*, and a whole host of others! Along with the vendor fair there will be FREE Fair Trade giveaways including coffee and chocolate. Fair Trade video games, and Fair Trade info booth. Throughout the day there will be film screenings including “Bean to Bar,” a film about Divine Chocolate and the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative and“Awaken Your Conscience,” a film about the Equal Exchange cooperative as well as Fair Trade speakers and presenters.

So if you are in the Big Apple this weekend, please take the time to come talk with fellow fair traders, learn about Fair Trade, eat some delicious chocolate and of course say hi to us! We hope to see you there celebrating and spreading awareness!

dsc00771We had an absolute blast at last weekend’s Earth Fair in our (second) favorite city in the world, New York New York. After enjoying vegan meatball subs from Boston fave TJ Scallywaggle’s on our 4 hour drive down, we arrived at Grand Central smack dab in the middle of Thursday rush hour. Somehow, by 8 pm, our little corner of historic Vanderbilt Hall was set-up and ready to greet the crowds…that was of course after circling the block multiple times in search of 42nd Street (it’s UNDER the overpass duh); finding no “loading dock” as instructed; double parking along city buses on one of the busiest blocks in the world; getting harrassed by local commuters (seriously. they weren’t very nice.); navigating our tiny $20 Staples dolly with 4 cartons of sneakers piled high around hot dog carts and small dogs; and getting inspected by large bomb sniffing police dogs and very large, very scary, but very polite, NYPD.

The craziness involved in getting there though was well worth it.   The New Yorkers we met were truly awesome and really showed us some love.  And we love them right back….of course it helps that our beloved Red Sox swept the Yankees that weekend!!  HA!  (Sorry.  We had to say it).

In all seriousness, the hard working people at the behind-the-scenes org Earth Day dsc00818New York did a fabulous job at throwing a great party full of education, music and fun and we can’t wait to do it all again next year.  Thousands upon thousands of people, young and old, streamed through the hall and out to the adjoining street fair to chat, shop, gaze and learn how they can make New York a greener apple.  In addition to all the fantastic supporters,  we also met great new friends at other new eco-friendly businesses Jade’s Toy Box, District Cotton, Multee Purpose, and Cardboardesign who we hope you’ll check out and support.

dsc00786While dirty and exhausted at the end of it all with only 1 minor injury thanks to our new rack, it hardly feels like ‘work’ when we met such awesome people doing such great things for the planet, danced with the crowds and overstuffed animals at the mainstage of the outdoor fest, and followed up the non-stop days with some serious non-stop nights with a little vegan restaurant hopping through Brooklyn by Gina and (just a few) martinis enjoyed by Anne in Manhattan.

If you missed us this past weekend, or just can’t get enough, we’ll be descending on NYC again on May 9th to celebrate World Fair Trade Day at Battery Park.  See you there!

World Fair Trade Day is being held THIS Saturday May 10! This annual commemorative day is a global campaign around the promotion of Fair Trade products as well as building the Fair Trade movement to connect more small producers with customers around the world. The day is endorsed by the International Fair Trade Association, or IFAT, which is the global network of all Fair Trade organizations and resources (it’s like a big version of the US’s Fair Trade Federation if you’re familiar with them).

This year’s WFT Day has a theme of Fair Trade & Ecology, which, as a Fair Trade eco-friendly company, we think is just perfect! Reports and presentations surrounding the day’s events will highlight how Fair Trade is environmentally friendly and how the 2 movements can work together to make our planet a healthier, better place for all.

At Autonomie, we’re throwing our first trunk show to celebrate World Fair Trade Day! Hosted by our friends at the eco shop Greenward in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 20 lucky people will get to hear stories about our Fair Trade workers and how our company is helping their communities as well as preview and purchase our line of Fair Trade hand bags, and flip flops (coming this summer!) plus all of the cool wares in Greenward’s store. To make the event even more fun, we’ve added a yummy organic wine tasting with Fair Trade organic chocolates from our good friends at Equal Exchange!

If you’re in the area, definitely give us a shout. We’d love to have you join us!  If you’re not in Boston, but would still love to participate in a World Fair Trade Day event, check out the Events Calendar at the Fair Trade Resource Network and help spread the word and the love of the Fair Trade movement!
