Awww there is nothing quite like a refreshing cocktail to cool down on those warm midsummer evenings. Even better, when that cocktail is made with Fair Trade and organic ingredients. One of our favorite drinks of all time are mojitos, however in the summer heat, the classic minty flavor just ins’t enough to cool down. In order to solve this we have added one of the newest in Fair Trade certified products and a delicious, refreshing fruit: mangoes!

Midsummer Mango Mojitos

Peel the mango and cut into slices. Mush the mango in a bowl an set aside. In a sturdy cup, drop the mint leaves in and add 1 ounce of rum. Let the leaves soak for about a minute and muddle with a muddler or handle of a wooden spoon. Add in 1/4 cup of mushed mango and mix. Add in ice and pour the lemon lime soda. Mix and garnish with a sprig of mint or lime wedge.

Organic Lemon Rose Bellini

4 oz Organic Champagne
1/2 oz Fair Trade Vodka
1 Tbsp Organic Lemon Sorbet
2 Organic Raspberries

You have many sources for organic champagne including Brut Nature Champagne and Proseccos. Check out this handy organic champagne guide for more choices. For Fair Trade vodka, we suggest you look for FAIR, made from Fair Trade certified quinoa. You should be able to find organic raspberries at your local farmer’s market, natural foods store, or grocery store. These locations should also carry organic lemon sorbet. We suggest using Natural Choice Foods Organic Lemon Sorbet. Now to make the drink…

In a cocktail shaker, add the vodka and sorbet. Shake these ingredients thoroughly and then add in the champagne. Stir, do not shake after adding champagne. Strain into a champagne flute and top with raspberries. Repeat for each drink served.

It’s been a great month long celebration of Fair Trade and hopefully will continue year round. But in case you want to celebrate both the creepy side of Halloween and Fair Trade Month, try out our Fair Trade cocktail: the Bloody-tini. These heat waves sweeping across the country just feel relentless! We sure know how to beat the summer heat in style with delicious fair trade and organic cocktails! I mean, who is going to say no to a refreshing, cooling cocktail on a warm summer night. We have the perfect recipe for you too, including spirit recommendations! So get out of that heat and into a Summer Berry Mojito.

Summer Berry Mojito

1 1/2 oz Organic Light Rum
2 Tbsp Fair Trade Sugar
1/2 Organic Lime, Juiced
8-12 Fresh Organic Mint Leaves
4 Organic Blackberries
4 Organic Raspberries
4 Organic Blueberries
Soda Water

In a bowl or sturdy cup, crush and muddle the mint and sugar.  Fill glass with crushed ice and add in the rum and lime juice, stir. Add in the muddled mint and sugar, as well as the berries. Fill the remainder of the glass with soda water and stir. Garnish the drink with an extra sprig of mint.

Unfortunately, there is no fair trade rum offered in the US (if you are in the UK try Utkins or Papagayo). However, we do have organic options here in the states such as Crusoe Organic Silver Rum. For fair trade sugar we recommend Wholesome Sweetners, which is also organic. For organic fruits and mints, check your local farmer’s market, natural foods store, or Whole Foods.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!  Today we celebrate all things Irish, or really we drink their beer, eat their foods, and wear the color green, but hey that’s close enough. We thought we would do a special cocktail recipe for this day. What better way to party like the Irish than to indulge in some whiskey and coffee? Ok so I don’t really know how authentic it is, seeing how I’ve never been to Ireland (but yes I do have a tiny bit of Irish blood in me). Anyway, we have put together this nice Vegan Irish Coffee recipe made with all organic and fair trade ingredients! As the Irish say, Sláinte!

Vegan Irish Coffee

6 oz Hot Fair Trade Organic Coffee
1 1/2 oz Organic Whiskey
1 tsp Organic Fair Trade Brown Sugar
Organic Soy Whip or Creamer to taste

Organic Nutmeg or Cinnamon for garnish

Brew your favorite brand of organic fair trade coffee (we suggest Equal Exchange) either in a french press or in your coffee maker. Once the coffee is hot, pour into a mug and add the whiskey and brown sugar. Mix until the sugar is melted.

Organic whiskey is new to the market and you may have trouble finding it. The closest we found to Irish Whiskey was Lion’s Pride Organic Whiskey out of Chicago and Organic Malt Whiskey from Braeside Farms Distillery in Oregon.  There are a few other organic whiskies, most hailing form Wales, Scotland, and England. As far as brown sugar, try Wholesome Sweetners Light Brown Sugar, which is vegan, fair trade, and organic!

Next, fill the rest of the mug with soy creamer or whipped cream. The whip is usually a bit thicker and works better for this recipe. We recommend either Soyatoo whipped cream or creamer, both made with organic ingredients.  Lastly, garnish your drink with a few sprinkles of organic nutmeg or cinnamon for a little extra taste.

Check out Mountain Rose Herbs for fair trade spices and Simply Organic for all organic spices. All the fair trade and organic products listed above should easily be found at your local co-op, natural foods grocery, Whole Foods, or online. For the whiskey, you will need to order online or go to a specialty liquor store, Bev & More is a good place to start. Once again, Happy St. Patrick’s Day and drink responsibly!

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and as the day approaches, your plans are being made. Whether you have a hot date, spending the night at home, or enjoying the time with your best friends: you will want to have a delicious drink in your hand. As part of our Fair Trade and Organic Cocktails segment we have put together a great love themed or flirty singles drink for the big day. The Flirtini is a great mix of flavors that will impress your date or give you the courage to ask one out! The best part is many of the ingredients can be made fair trade or organic to give it that conscious and eco-friendly punch. Remember to drink responsibly and Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Flirtini

3 ounces organic vodka

1.5 ounces all natural Chambord
Splash of organic lime juice
Splash of all natural sour
Fill a shaker with ice. Add all liquid ingredients above and shake. Strain into martini glass and serve straight up. Garnish with a slice of lime.
Recommendations:
For organic vodkas, there are a whole host of choices including Square One and Rain. So far there is only one fair trade vodka on the market: FAIR Spirits!  They also make a fair trade Goji liquor that is a great addition.  As far as Chambord goes, there is only one brand and currently they state that all their ingredients are natural, however, not certified organic. Hopefully that will change soon!  The brand Ripe makes an all natural Sour Cocktail Mix made with organic ingredients such as organic agave. Lastly, organic limes can be found at most grocery stores, co-ops, and natural foods stores.

Are you ready to get your drink on? I hope so, because FAIR Vodka is now available in the US. You may remember last September’s blog entry where we introduced our readers to the announcement of the first fair-trade certified Vodka, FAIR Vodka. When we first mentioned this marvelous product, the availability was much more restricted, but thanks to the innovative geniuses behind the Fair Trade Spirits Company, the demand for FAIR Vodka in the US market has been heard and met. Select liquor stores, Whole Foods, and other natural foods stores across the country now supply this socially responsibly made liquor for you to leisurely enjoy at your convenience.

This spirit is very special because it takes the quinoa grain, a great protein source for non-meat eaters and carnivores alike, and ethically produces Vodka that improves lives. Not only is this the first Vodka that has been derived from the quinoa grain, but all the quinoa used is Fair Trade certified. A native of Peru, quinoa has been a staple in the diets of many cultures for over 5,000 years, but only recently has this “super-grain” become popular in the United States. The research behind the FAIR Vodka process totaled two years, and is a collaboration of French distillers and Bolivian farmers who are part of ANAPQUI (Asociacion Nacional de Productores de Quinoa), which was established in 1983 as a collaborative effort for small farmers to collectively sell and market the quinoa they grow.

I can’t wait to introduce my friends and family to my mad-mixing-skills this Memorial Day weekend with the inclusion of FAIR Vodka as the spirit of choice. Barbeques with booze are my favorite, and I would love to swap recipes for mixers to try out. Here are two of my favorite cocktails:

The Cape Cod (or Vodka Cranberry)*

1 1/2 oz FAIR Vodka
4 oz Organic Cranberry Juice

Combine in a highball glass with ice. Garnish with a wedge of lime, and serve.

Espresso Cocktail:*

3/4 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
3/4 oz FAIR Vodka
1 oz Fair Trade Espresso
Prepare a martini glass with a brown-sugared rim. Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into the prepared glass, and serve.

Please feel free to share your favorite recipes! And remember drinking responsibly for yourself and the planet is easy!
